However, in the west, where white bridal gowns reign supreme, it is important to stay away from the color as a guest so as not to seem like you are trying to upstage the bride on her special day. 
While it is possible to make a mistake - perhaps wearing a light pink dress that appears white in the low light of a wedding venue - there are countless tales of jealous mother-in-laws, attention-seeking sisters, and vengeful exes purposefully sporting white dresses, and sometimes even full-on bridal gowns, as guests. While it is tempting to let your hand 'slip,' spilling some punch on the dress of an inconsiderate upstager, it is best to just ignore them, let everyone judge them, or ask them to leave.
