If you have ever been in an open-relationship, then you know how it works. You can't just start an open-relationship because you are unhappy in the current one you are in. That is a stupid game to play. Open-relationships are about trust and strengthening a bond. Not trying to distance yourself. 

Unfortunately, for some emotionally immature people, they like to abuse the idea of an open-relationship with someone they allegedly "love." For example, the man in this Redditor's post. They dated for over 5 years and then one day he decided he wanted an open-relationship. She absolutely did not, but after months of him putting her down and pushing her, she reluctantly agreed to one. She was at rock bottom but quickly found out that she could actually be happier. Eventually, she decided she deserved to be happier (good for her!) and found someone that she absolutely fell head over heels for. She told her open-relationship boyfriend that she found what he wanted to find during this "open-relationship" and she was leaving him. The tables quickly turned when it turned out he couldn't even land one date. But it was too late, she didn't care that he "knew" he messed up and wanted her back. She had rediscovered her spark and was now in love and actually being treated well. When you play stupid games with other people's hearts, you're going to get stupid results.
