Lucky for Maxine, a certified veterinarian reached out to Derrick and shared that Maxine's condition was dire and possibly fatal! He had to get her in right away.

At first, Maxine's trust in Derrick made her complacent, but then instinct took over…

She grew wise to Derrick's attempts at trapping her and became increasingly more elusive.

After stealing his bribery snacks and dashing across the street to munch them, Maxine's dental problem seemed more and more desperate.

The vets worked quickly and diligently to get Maxine under anesthesia so that they could check out how desperate her teething situation was–and what they found shocked them.

Once Maxine was assessed, they grabbed the snippy's and the dremel and got to work on those front incisors.

After her sedation wore off, Derrick brought Maxine back to their neighborhood to return her to the wild.

Worried she'd never trust him again, he set her free with a hopeful snack, praying she'd forgive him for the scary cage and the spooky vet visit after the relief of her first pain-free meal in months.

ONE WEEK LATER
About a week after her release, Derrick was relieved that Maxine was still coming around the house. She hadn't completely lost faith in him, so he did his research on how he could help her keep her teeth filed naturally and without human interference.

As it turns out, if they nibble on deer antlers, it can help a ton with their teeth filing! So Derrick installed several around the yard for her to chew.

Clearly Maxine sitll really trusts Derrick and it's this kind of animal connection that forms a permanent bond between hoomans and their pets. While Maxine is still very much wild, she'll always be thankful to Derrick for stepping in to save her life.

Now that she's fully recovered, she can go on a live a full squirrel life.
