When doing something that is considered good for other people, it is often not just about the act itself, but about the intentions behind it. If all you care about is what you gain out of your good deed, then is it really a good deed at all? Yet, does it have to be pure of any selfish intention for it to have a positive effect on someone else?
When someone decides to donate some of their clothes to charity, their intentions are usually a mix of selfish and selfless. They seek a way to get rid of stuff they don't want, but they could have easily thrown them out to the trash instead of donating them. It is an act that benefits both parties, but in a way that also helps others.
However, if one visits a charity shop and acts like they are doing the employees a favor by donating old clothes, then one might as well have thrown those clothes into the trash. Much like the Karen in this Reddit story, who could not have acted more entitled and selfish when she arrived at a charity shop to get rid of trash she didn't want to handle herself. Luckily the staff there managed to restrain her, and even get her banned permanently from the store.
