Every person is entitled to choose their friends and the people who are closest to them. No one should tell you who you can be friends with, and whether or not you are allowed to talk to certain people.
That being said, common sense points out that there should be some red lines one should not cross. For example, being friends with your sibling's ex should not cross your mind, or keeping in contact with your ex's parents. Some relationships are simply off-limits, and no one should have to be the one saying it.
The mom in this Reddit story, for instance, is best friends with her son's ex-girlfriend, and not only that, she also thought its was a good idea to invite the ex to her son's wedding. The bride wasn't a fan of her future mother-in-law inviting the ex to her wedding, and after several fights with both the mother and the groom, decided to simply call of the wedding.
