Let's talk about movies. Some individuals adore all kinds of cinema, from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to David Lynch, maybe even some Pixar. Having a diverse film taste is quite common, but in recent years, there has been an uptick of cinephiles online. I'm not talking about the traditional definition of the word—I'm talking about an extreme movie buff who tends to stick to arthouse films and the Criterion Collection. Now, as an avid fan of both categories, I'm not here to yuck anybody's yum (especially my own).
However, the word ‘cinephile’ has taken on new meaning in the last few years due to meme culture. Recently, it's been given a negative connotation, where it usually describes someone as self-involved, a know-it-all of nature, etc. I think it's possible to be a cinephile and a fun person (hopefully I am living proof), but man, is it fun to make fun of myself sometimes. Good movies can be confusing or straight to the point. But you bet your bottom dollar I'm going to rave about David Lynch's Lost Highway until I'm old and gray.
