Some customers literally cannot wait to get their hands on the next big product release. For a certain type of consumer, having the newest tech or best-selling book or new clothing line drop is absolutely essential. When it comes to electronics, why not wait a few months to let people review the product and make sure it actually works well? 

For other products, however, it does make sense to try to get it as fast as possible. If you lived through the original "Harry Potter" craze of the early 2000s, you'll remember the fervor around the books was unreal. Everyone did try to get copies of the book on the day it was released… otherwise, the story might get badly spoiled for you! 

If you didn't preorder a book, you'd have to wait in long lines outside a bookstore. And even then, there's no guarantee you'd be able to purchase it: if there are 100 copies of the book and 300 customers in line, there are going to be a lot of disappointed fans standing around waiting for nothing.
