Managers can get themselves twisted up over any number of petty situations. Again and again, they prove that their fragile egos are the most important thing to them.
Sometimes, in fact, all too often in life, you'll come across people who like to place themselves above you in some way. It doesn't really matter how or when, or why; as long as they feel that they are superior to you in some way, they'll remain satisfied. However, should yu prove to them in some way that this isn't the case you'll shatter the facade that they've built for themselves and bring that ego crashing down.
That's how it was in this plant, where operators were sent at the end of the first year to have their photographs taken after their shift—when they looked at their absolute worst. These photos would be immortalized on the "wall of shame," a wall of all staff photos, for the remainder of their time at the company. The true purpose behind this, the workers felt, was because plant management liked to see their own shirts and ties contrasted against the grubby uniforms of the just off-shift line staff.
So, determined to prove this point to be true and turn it on its nose, this floor worker arranged with a compatriot to change into a shirt and tie before getting their picture taken, drawing the ire of the plant manager when he realized what had happened.
