It's so hot right now, even the pigs are sweating. Corn fields are humid, and the rows are tilled, but those hay bails aren't going to bundle themselves, are they? Being a farmer isn't all it's chalked up to be. Kiddos in class have their dream job fluctuate between doctor, astronaut, and farmer so often, that they forget that only one of those jobs calls for an 18-hour day and 7-day weeks. Although farm life is unglamorous–as I scrape the dirt out from my fingernails and contemplate the unwashed combine in waiting to be cared for in the barn–there are some amazing perks of farm life.
Your only neighbors are livestock, the food is always fresh, and your kids double as excellent helpers when your planters go home early for the day. The world needs us farmers to keep tilling, planting, and harvesting our crops because without us, who's going to put the cornbread on the kitchen counter and who's going to provide all the cabbage you need for a good ole fashioned country coleslaw cookout? Just as soon as the heat cranks down from the sun and the leaves turn orange, farmers everywhere will be activated, entering harvest season with a grin on their face and a 'stop payment' on their tractor lease. John Deere can wait until we cash this check after harvest season.
