For most companies, there must be a few people who can take over a manager's daily tasks in case they unexpectedly leave. But the real challenging duty that must be taken over is usually the actual management job, and managing other people within the company. With the lack of a clear manager, things can very well derail, so it is crucial that someone will be ready to guide the rest of the team back on track.
In this Reddit story, OP (original poster) was ready to take over her manager's job after they were fired, but they were not ready to start managing their coworkers. Specifically, one new coworker who still hadn't really settled into the job. That caused a lot of stress for OP, who didn't know how to handle all the attention this coworker was demanding.
