I find it a little baffling that there aren't more shows like "Star Trek." And I don't just mean sci-fi shows because we have plenty of those. For me, what has always set "Star Trek" apart from any other sci-fi show, and also sci-fi movies for that matter, is the optimism. You see, pretty much any story set in the far future always depicts a bleak, mostly dystopian vision of the future. You know the shtick - robots have taken over, an alien race has enslaved humanity, apes rule the world, that type of story.
"Star Trek," on the other hand, shows us humanity at its peak - a civilization that has solved all of its problems and is now dedicated to helping other, less fortunate civilizations around the universe. That is a very uplifting and wonderful concept in my opinion, and I have only seen it done on two shows - "Star Trek," and "The Orville," which is pretty much a "Star Trek" homage.
