High school cliques are real. They may seem like a figment of movies and TV shows about American high schools, created because of movies like Mean Girls and shows like Glee. However, groups of teenagers in high school tend to gather around certain activities. The theater kids tend to stick with the theater kids, the basketball bros tend to hoop together, and the goth kids tend to haunt the graveyards together. High school is a time when you're learning how you define yourself, and what image you put out to the world.
It's easy to get caught in a stereotype and stay there for a long time. As soon as you're the bassoon kid at your school, you might be the bassoon kid forever. But some things cut a swath across all social groups. Some things bring people together, like watching the principal get pantsed at assembly. Or memes. Everyone loves memes.
