As your party pierces through the heavily wooded tree line, all but your wizard are startled by what you've encountered. Slippery, uneven, and covered in broken corners, a narrow stairwell lies before you, carved into the steep mountainside like an evil, obsidian ladder to the heavens. Shrouded by a dense mist, the wonders above lie beyond your sight, but all signs on the magic map you acquired by the random traveler in your last session point this way. Although most of your party is running low on supplies, companions, and fireballs from that accidental L10 forest troll encounter, the party deliberates on the likelihood of survival if you continue onward.
According to the map, up above there's a tavern that will replenish the party's strength, but like all maps, there's a foul beast drawn in the corner of the mountains that leads you to believe there's something evil afoot. But as your DM notes, you've ignored that decorative emblem.
With -5 charisma, your barbarian charges forward, climbing the stairwell with unbridled fortitude and the rest of the party reluctantly follows. As their feet slip on gravelly steps and moisture wicks between their fingers and the handrail, the party can almost taste the delicious ales that lie before them. That is… until they hear a thunderous bellow that shakes the mountain beneath them. Leathery wings cover what little sunshine peaks through the mist and the world goes dark just before glowing a flaming red. I guess the dragon emblem wasn't just decor…
And once again, this party prepares for a TPK at the hands of their mischievously creative DM.
