The hobbits in Lord of the Rings are often described as 'odd' or 'weird' little fellows by every other character. But what's so weird about enjoying the finer things in life like a comfortable bed, a warm hearth in your fireplace, and a 6-course meal every evening? While it may seem odd to the large ones inhabiting Middle Earth, hobbit life must be quite enjoyable. There's nothing strange (or odd) about loving your hobbies, breathing fresh air, and avoiding generally evil places like Mordor and Minas Morgul.
Rangers, elves, dwarves, and wizards can handle the woes of the world, right? Ironically, the real odd ones and the strangest strangers of all of the hobbits would actually be the only two hobbitses the world ever saw: Bilbo and Frodo. So while others in Hobbiton tended to their garden and lived none the wiser, these two–no thanks to the Sackville-Bagginses–managed to save the lives of every living thing in Middle Earth, simply by being their odd selves.
So three cheers to the weirdness that makes us all a little odd, for maybe one day it's our undeniable unusualness that'll be just the thing that saves the day.
