We have such a negative view of the "step" family in this culture. I think it all goes back to Cinderella. Like in most fairytales, Cinderella's mother had passed, and her father moved on, leaving her in the custody of her new evil stepmother, and her evil stepsisters. In the story, the step-family was so over-the-top cruel that it left an impression on every young person who watched it. Step = Evil, we concluded. The trope of the evil stepfamily has persisted ever since. But a good number of people in blended families will tell you that the opposite is true. In the best cases, they become just as much a part of your family as blood does.
