Hiring—especially in the way it's usually conducted—is not an exact science. There's a lot of speculation and social shadowboxing going on, with elaborately constructed facades masking true personalities to seem more put together and desirable, according to the bizarre decorum of the entire process. The entire thing is based more on "vibes" than any concrete reality.
Superstition seems to reign on both sides of the interview table, with everyone having their own tricks. Even the most well-intentioned interviews can be marred by a gauntlet of questions that often seem to have little relevance to the actual work the candidate would be doing.
Even then, correctly completing some asinine test the hiring manager has laid out (something they read 20 years ago in a managerial "self-help" book) is more likely to make or break a candidate's chance of getting the job—regardless of their other qualifications.
This employee shared their manager's bizarre test that they use to automatically determine whether or not they were going to proceed with a candidate, sparking discussion on the topic in this online community.
