This employee didn't want to one-up their boss, but their hand was forced (by said boss). What's an employee to do?
While working in IT at a small company, this guy was accustomed to working on different types of devices and operating systems. The employee was encouraged to bring their own device "as long as it got the job done." It's clear that their boss didn't understand what they did, though, after he made some questionable decisions.
It's one thing if you and your boss don't get along at work. But showing your strained relationship in front of clients can make things super awkward. It's probably more awkward for the boss who was trying to make it look like he knew what he was doing when he really had no idea. But clearly it would make an impression on the client who spent hours waiting for a resolution for their problems. The clients won't care about who's right or wrong---they just want their issues fixed as quickly as possible so they can get back to business as usual.
