Their boss had a laundry list of bad management behavior, including not paying overtime and spying on workers in their homes… While many managers feel a sense of doubt and distrust when their workers call out sick, this boss's habit of leaving work to embark on covert outings—spying on the workers in their homes to make sure they were really sick at home—is another level of insane management practice.
Behavior such as this from their boss prompted this worker to stage a strategic exit. First, as a point of personal and professional courtesy, they warned their benevolent assistant manager, who also hated their boss for her terrible practices and offenses against him personally—this was the only person they would tell of their impending departure. They then offered to stay late at the office in order to field phone calls—but really so they could be left in the office alone—before staging their exit.
