Management often concentrates all of their efforts on one area, meaning that they put the bulk of a couple of jobs onto one employee, risking it all. You have got to hand it to them, as it is quite brave of them to so boldly assume one person will WANT to take on so much responsibility, and then that they will be able to want to continue with it consistently.
So the saying, 'Don't put all your eggs in one basket' definitely applies here… One manager who (shocker) did not know how to do his job, made a data engineer who was earning way below average take on a 3-person job. At first, the employee, OP, was excited, as he felt that this was an opportunity to 'build the IT team from the ground up', but it quickly became apparent that management was simply using him, and not properly compensating him for his efforts at all.
