Let's be clear: the reason why this employee had to come in was not because of their negligence but because of the manager's. It doesn't matter where you work, whether it's retail or for the government. If you get sick, as all human beings do once in a while, you should be entitled to a day off without repercussions of any kind. However, there are still some managers out there with backward moral standards who believe that rallying despite feeling sick is a greater display of strength. We should know all too well at this point that "rallying" is a selfish act that merely risks getting everyone sick for the temporary gain of looking like a good employee.
This Redditor was clearly being forced to come in as a result of their manager's incompetence as they were unable to find literally anyone else to cover their shift. That shouldn't be anyone's fault but the manager's because as we said, getting sick is inevitable and every manager should be able to pivot and improvise when these circumstances arise.
