Before movie streaming was even a concept, you had to physically take yourself to a video store. Back in the day (the 1990s, in this case) when you wanted to watch a film, you had to visit a Blockbuster or a Hollywood Video location. These were glorious rooms full of video tapes, and later DVDs entered the mix. The place was full of people at any time of day. You would usually rent a few movies for under $5 a peice, and would return them within a week or so, just like you would with a library book. If you were late, be prepared for those late fees!
This person worked at such a store, at a family-owned place with a terrible manager. It seems like their manager Amanda had a specific desire to make the OP feel small, in order to make herself feel more powerful in front of customers. She even berated the OP for being on the phone. Not a cell phone, which weren't really a thing yet. No, she was mad that the OP was on the store's phone as part of their job. The OP was talking with a customer, but when Amanda decided she needed to chat on the phone herself, she flipped her lid.
