This family will not be stopped by an HOA.
The whole concept of an HOA is designed to benefit HOA members, not the people who live in the neighborhood. We all want to just decorate our properties as we see fit. If you're an adult who owns a property, why should anyone else tell you what to do there (not counting things outside the law, obviously).
If you want to plant sunflowers, put in a nice swing, or support your favorite sports team with a sign or a flag, there's no reason you shouldn't do so. Unless you're on the board of a money-grubbing HOA — many HOA's don't let people in their neighborhoods do anything without a fine attached. One HOA we wrote about recently wouldn't let the a guy park his car outside his own home. HOA's can easily become a cash grab for the members, and a major annoyance for everyone else. In fact, HOA fines can be hundreds or thousands of dollars per year! You really do have to be cautious if you buy a home in their territory.
Check out this story below, of one family who refused to take the HOA's silly rules at face value. Next up, these people had a glorious time quitting their jobs, since they got to tell their bosses exactly what they thought about them.
