Dogs are incredibly intelligent creatures. Much more than most of us give them credit for. Sure, not every canine is the sharpest tool in the shed, but there aren't many other animals that have the tactical capacity to emotionally manipulate us to such extremes. A bearded dragon doesn't have the ability to stare at you with such specificity that you're forced to pay attention to it.
There's a reason the phrase "puppy dog eyes" exists. Dogs are adorable, they're lovable, and they know that for a fact. At least for me, that's why they make such great companions. If I'm taking care of another living being, I want it to have some semblance of complex thought. Even if those thoughts are used to get what they want. That's not to say that we're prisoners to the desires of our canine companions. Maybe you don't want to take your dog on a walk when they prompt you, but by the time you get home, you're bound to have enjoyed that time with your furry friend.
