'Not my job': Jack-of-all-trades employee gets denied a promotion because he works too hard; follows instruction to 'stay in his lane', triumphantly watching the bosses scramble

Hardworking employees often get the short end of the stick. Because of their efficiency, they're punished with more work and more tasks, but are never fairly compensated for going above-and-beyond. In this case one employee, who had been juggling the tasks of at least 4 other positions, found himself in a bind when he approached his bosses concerning a promotion. Rightly so, OP decided that his hard work deserved to be paid off, so he approached his manager to see if he could get a raise in order to compensate for his skills– the boss, naturally, gaslit him into thinking that his hard work was for nothing. 

The boss claimed that OP, a jack-of-all-trades, was 'distracted too easily' at the office and was too busy being everyone's hero instead of staying in his lane. Naturally, OP was fuming when he was denied a promotion, he knew they only did this so they could keep him exactly where he was.
