When you watch a superhero movie (or play a superhero game), it's tough to avoid imagining what it would be like to have that super power. Of all the heroic characters at our disposal, with DC, Marvel, graphic novels, and video games at every corner store, Spiderman has to be one of the heroes with the most uniform story across all platforms and all multiverses. Nerd guy gets bit by a bug, gets powers, fights crime, flies around the city with webs, gets the girl– That's a pretty rad superpower right? Apart from the Uncle Ben debacle, it all looks pretty good. Well, what every spiderman has in common, the best known being Peter Parker and Miles Morales, is that dang spider bite that gives them their power. As far as origin stories are concerned, that's one step most folks would be willing to avoid to gain the ability to fly.
Think about when your ankles are full of bites in the summer, now imagine one of those bug bites is a gene-altering spider that turns you into a arachnoid-person with freakish abilities, goofy humor, and a purposeful existence… Hmm, now that we think of it, that's not so bad. Multiply that by the multiverse and we've got ourselves hundreds of spiderpeople ready to save the day.
