We all have those moments once in a while (sometimes multiple times a day) when we wonder why we're wired the way we are. Personally speaking, I am no expert on this matter. I am merely an observer of memes, tweets, and popular culture, but I can say that the self-deprecating mental health jokes are our collective coping mechanism to make us feel ever so slightly less alone. Or at the very least, to make light of a mediocre situation. It's not exactly the ideal material to make light of, but it's better to laugh at yourself than to wallow. Although if we're being totally honest with ourselves, we do plenty of wallowing on a day-to-day basis too, but at least, we try to balance that self-pity with making relatable jokes about it.
