Before the new millennium began, most computer calendars only used the last two numbers to distinguish the year: '99 instead of 1999. Everyone was terrified that when the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve 1999, all of the computers would not be able to handle the '00 and shut down. People were advised to turn off their computers before midnight on December 31st, 1999, to avoid any catastrophe.
