Latest Xbox Update Is Resetting Consoles to Factory Settings!

The latest firmware update for Xbox Series X|S is here, and apparently, it comes with an unexpected feature—resetting some users' consoles back to factory settings. But don't panic just yet—your console is probably safe… probably.

I'm one of those people who hits "update" the second a new patch drops, but after this? I might start exercising a little more caution. Players in the Xbox Insider program who installed the latest update are reporting that their entire profiles have been wiped. For those unfamiliar, Xbox Insider is Microsoft's testing program that lets players in different tiers (Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead) try out new features before they go public. Normally, that's awesome. This time? Not so much.

To be clear—if you're a regular Xbox user, you're totally fine. This issue only affects players enrolled in the Xbox Insider program. So, unless you're one of the brave souls testing experimental updates, you don't have to worry about your console suddenly forgetting who you are.

As of now, the official Xbox Insider social media accounts have yet to comment on the issue.

If you're in the Xbox Insider program and want to bail before the next surprise update, you can opt out by heading to the Xbox Insider Hub and selecting "Leave Preview."
